RESERVOIR & TUBE CLEANING
The best way to care for your reservoir is to clean and dry it after every use, especially if you fill the reservoir with anything other than water. However, if a reservoir has not been cleaned after every use, and mold or discoloration develops:

  1. Use hot water and a CamelBak Cleaning Tablet. (Or use 2 tablespoons of baking soda or bleach instead of CamelBak Cleaning Tab.) Mix the solution inside your reservoir and elevate the reservoir above the tube and Big Bite Valve. Pinch the bite valve, allowing the solution to flow into the drink tube and fill the bite valve.
  2. Let the reservoir and cleaning solution sit in the reservoir and drink tube for about 30 minutes.
  3. Wash the reservoir with hot water and mild soap. Be sure to completely rinse away the cleaning solution in the reservoir and drink tube before using again. You can also use CamelBak brushes from our Cleaning Kit to scrub your reservoir and drink tube. Brushes are the best way to ensure you are scrubbing all of the areas of the reservoir clean.
  4. Once the reservoir is clean, be sure to air dry overnight so no moisture is trapped inside, which can cause mold to grow.

These steps will make your reservoir safe for use. If there are still spots left behind, these are permanent mold stains that may not be removable. However, your reservoir is still safe and usable after you’ve cleaned it.

Bit valve too hard

I recommend a camelbak for those that don't like to stop when riding their bikes. It's easy to wear, convenient and makes it easy to drink. But I have one suggestion. Read complete review

I recommend a camelbak for those that don't like to stop when riding their bikes. It's easy to wear, convenient and makes it easy to drink. But I have one suggestion.

I would like to see the bit valve thinner on the these newer camelbaks. The plastic is harder to bit down on compared to my old camelbak. I had an old camelback and the plastic was much much thinner. I bought this last year and they are so much harder and it hurts my teeth/jaws after hrs of riding.

Please consider making the bit valve thinner. It looks like it's a 1/4 of an inch thick and the plastic is HARD. If is was softer I think the thickness wouldn't be an issue.....making it softer would make it easier to bit down on and wouldn't cause pain.

This product extends the freezing time in winter, and heating time in summer, but only by a non-useful margin. If you don't drink regularly in sub zero temperatures, your line will still freeze very fast. Similarly in summer, you get a mouthful of cooking hot water. Best thing to do in both environments is to allow water to flow back into reservoir and leave the tube empty when not drinking.

Try Under Your Jacket?

By Scott G

Comments about CamelBak Black Antidote Thermal Control Kit:

I have had one of these for years, use it mostly for lift served skiing, and never had a problem with freezing. I think the key is that I wear it under my jacket. I wonder if all the freezing issues discussed here are related to wearing it outside the outer layer? Just wondering ...

Sip along the winter trails

Pros

  • Attaches The Usual Way
  • Insulated
  • Is Long Enough For Winter
  • Love Covers

Cons

  • End Of Water Cooled Off
  • No Shut Off Valve

Best Uses

  • Cold Weather Hikes

Comments about CamelBak Black Antidote Thermal Control Kit:

I like to sip during a hike, even in cold weather, and on the trail. Asking the group to stop that often to pull out a bottle just does not work. I've used this at 30"F, but not colder as yet. I think I will need to tuck the bite-valve into my coat for really cold weather-no big deal.

Doesn't work in temps around 15 deg.

Comments about CamelBak Black Antidote Thermal Control Kit:

Went skiing with a few buddies in temps around 15 deg. I had this insulated hose and my friend didn't. After 2 runs down the mountain both of our hoses were frozen solid. We even used warm water the next day and had the same problem. Best bet is to blow the water out of your hose back into the bladder when done drinking.

    Mine has worked great.

Comments about CamelBak Black Antidote Thermal Control Kit:

I know a lot of people have trouble with theirs freezing, but I haven't had that problem. I did some climbing above tree-line in the snow without it freezing. I don't know what the temperature was, but it was cold and windy. I did drink often to keep the water flowing (I ran out of water, actually), and I also blew the water back into the tank so that the water wouldn't sit in the tube. Being hydrated made a huge difference at that altitude!

I haven't been skiing with it yet. I imagine that is probably a pretty intense test of it as well.

Mine has worked great so far!

Comments about CamelBak Black Antidote Thermal Control Kit:

I bought one of these to be used recently on a ski trip to Colorado - January 2016. My hope was that it would provide me with an usable tube (not frozen). This was not the case however. After a few hours, the tube and mouthpiece were frozen, thus not usable. Perhaps I will try keeping part of the tube under my jacket next time. Although, that kind of defeats the purpose of me getting this insulated tube in the first place...

I used to just have the standard tube that comes with the Camelbak backpack, but I decided to invest in one of these mainly because of the mouthpiece cover. I absolutely love it, because it keeps it clean and the insulated tube is also nice!

Comments about CamelBak Black Antidote Thermal Control Kit:

I bought this tube for a XC ski trip where temps dipped into the single digits. My partner had a Geigerrig hydration pack with an insulated tube. The first time we went to take a drink, his tube was completely frozen. Mine had started to freeze but I could still pass water thru mine. I ended up putting the bite valve covered end inside my fleece to offer some protection from the minus 15 wind chills. This did the trick to keep the bite value working. Water in the tube never froze. The Geigerrig tube was unusable the entire time, so lucky thing that I took my 3 L bladder with me for both of us to drink!!
