FAQ

How long does the All Clear bulb last?
The All Clear bulb is engineered to last 10,000 cycles which is approximately the equivalent of 3 bottles a day everyday for 9 years. The All Clear is programmed to automatically cease operation after that point.

What specifically does it mean that All Clear can be used effectively in cold temperature water? What does that mean in regards to use in cold weather?
The All Clear cap construction separates and insulates the bulb from direct water contact thereby minimizing the impact of colder temperature water which can impact bulb performance. The All Clear has been tested and proven effective for treating water down to 39°F (4°C). The product has been tested in conditions with the ambient air temperature down to 32°F (0°C). Battery performance may be impacted and less efficient in very cold temperature conditions. In the event that you are in sub-freezing conditions, the All Clear unit should be warmed to 32°F (0°C) prior to use.

Can I use All Clear to treat water with ice in it?
No, you should not use the All Clear on water with ice in it because the UV light cannot pass through the air bubbles or impurities in the ice. We recommend removing the ice from the drink before treating it. You could also allow the ice to melt and then treat the water.

Can I use the All Clear with boiling water?
No, we do not recommend using the All Clear on boiling water, as the high temperature could damage the unit.

Does the All Clear take care of water droplets that might be on the threads of the water bottle?
All Clear does not purify surfaces on the outside of the drinking container including the threads of a water bottle. Users should check the threads and use a clean piece of cloth to wipe off the threads of the bottle before drinking.

Another way to address this issue is to use the All Clear Pre-Filter, particularly in fresh water sources like lakes or streams where water contact with the threads is more likely. The All Clear Pre-Filter conveniently snaps over the opening of the .75L bottle and is designed to keep the threads dry while submerging the bottle into your water supply. Always check the threads for water droplets before drinking.

Does the CamelBak All Clear neutralize Cholera? Does it neutralize E coli?
Technically speaking, we have not specifically tested All Clear against Cholera or E coli bacteria organisms because they are not part of the EPA guidelines. However, one of the reasons R. Terrigena is the bacteria selected per the EPA guideline is because it comes from the Enterobacteriaciae family. This family of bacteria is more resistant than those of the Cholera or E coli families, so logically if you can neutralize R. Terrigena then you can effectively neutralize lesser resistant bacteria such as Cholera or E coli as well, which is why the EPA guide standard has been established.

Unlike other reviewers on here, I was not a product tester. I bought and paid for the All Clear from a retail store in order to use it for travel to foreign countries, where the water quality might be questionable.

This is not a filter. Other reviewers on here refer to this device as a filter, and it is not. Any particulates or junk in the water will still be in the water unless you use some type of pre-filter before the water goes into the bottle. (This is not a complaint - I knew exactly what I was buying when I purchased it. I'm just clarifying statements made by other reviewers.)

The UV light does not filter the water and it does not alter the taste of the water as chemical treatments do (this is a good thing). The UV light sterilizes the water by scrambling the DNA of the harmful bacteria and viruses that are in the water so they cannot reproduce. It does not 'kill' the nasties, it sterilizes them so they pass through your body without causing you problems.

The device is simple enough to use, and is great for what I needed it for. Yes, it can purify only 750 mL at a time, but in comparison to other UV purifiers out there, they typically only go up to 1-liter per treatment anyway, and I like the slightly smaller 750 mL bottle for traveling with.

My one big complaint about the All Clear is that there is no way to lock out the power (on/off) button on the UV cap. The power button is very easy to unintentionally activate when the UV cap is in its travel case, especially when it's being packed and transported with other gear in a backpack.

The travel case for the UV cap is a soft, thin, neoprene-like case. It holds the UV cap and the USB charging cable for the battery. The power button on the UV cap sits right on top of the cap and is very easy to unintentionally activate through the soft travel case. Anything pressing against it can turn it on.

The first concern is that the batteries can be prematurely drained without you even being aware of it, and therefore the device might not be usable when it's needed (I'm not always going to be near a USB port for charging it).

The second concern is that these repeated unintentional activations will count against the 10,000-cycle life of the device. The UV cap is programmed to stop working after 10,000 cycles. I realize that's a large number, but how many times did it activate inside my backpack without me being aware of it?

The third concern is with the heat that's given off when the UV lamp is on. It does get warm, and that heat is now trapped inside the closed travel case inside my pack, surrounded by other gear.

The batteries in the UV cap are not removable and not even accessible, and there's no way to lock out the power button from unintentional activations. If you press it, the UV lamp goes on for its 1-minute treatment, whether you want it to or not. This problem should really be addressed in order to make the All Clear a much more travel-friendly water treatment option. Outside of that, I still prefer it over the pen-style UV purifiers.

Pros: slick design, RUGGED BUILD, easy to carry, lightweight, well made, easy to use, WORKS 100% effectively when used as directed.0CONS: USB power only.....please please please make one that runs off CR123 Lithium batteries! some of us spend several days to weeks in the field WITHOUT access to a USB port!!!! also, it would be nice to INCLUDE the prefilter cap WITH the UV system and bottle.....no one has perfectly clear water supplies anymore...other than the few cons.....a well made kit.

Comments about CamelBak All Clear™ Bottle:

The unit design is about perfect. Easily screws onto any of the Chute or Eddy Camelbak bottles that I have. Very conveniend and effective UV sterilization and have used it on backpacking & mountaineering trips all over the Sierras. Never been sick. Just wish this was micro USB or even better, powered by CR123 lithium batteries! It would be perfect with batteries!

Comments about CamelBak All Clear™ Bottle:

I have had the product for about a year now; only using it on a handful of trips. Works perfect every time I have needed it (IE I have not gotten sick). The battery would probably last a couple of days for one person, but I would generally charge it with my Biolite Camp Stove at night (my phone did not like the voltage from the camp stove, but this had no problems).

I lost the bottle+travel cap at the gym a few weeks ago, and I have been annoyed over getting a new bottle for the cap. I figured they were unique.. Happy to say I was wrong! I was about to machine an adapter to put it to my Nalgene when I realized it already fit! They could have designed the cap so when I lost it I had to buy a new special bottle from them; or toss the $100 cap.

I had no idea there was any sort of standard threading to these bottles, but I am so happy to know that now! If I lose my bottle during a trip, I can just plug the sterilizer onto any similar bottle!

I travel and backpack year round a lot, internationally and local. I loved this as the no wait after the time to filter instead of the drops or pumping options. But on my last trip it just showed ER and I couldn't get it to work, thankfully someone on the trip had a pump filter so I was able to use it but I was stuck carrying the heavy set up for nothing! I realize I need to carry a back up system or drops..ugh! For such an expensive system, very unhappy with it. Now I nee dto figure out how to replace or send back...

I travel to 2nd and 3rd world countries and need a system to take with me. After many other filters this one proved the easiest to use and not difficult to carry.

I have to pre-filter the water because of heavy metals so IF this included a metals filter it would definitely be a 6 out of 5! :)

I used this camelBak for a one week trip. Upon my return home I went to charge it and would not take a charge. The indicator shows two out of four "bars". Now it is going back under the "sounds too good to be true" warranty. It is unreliable at best and I doubt I will ever trust one of these again.

Comments about CamelBak All Clear™ Bottle:

Knowing we'd be traveling to countries where water is not advisable to drink or even brush your teeth with, we added another Camelbak product to our travels.
The All Clear bottle seemed simple enough, per directions. Put water in, turn UV light on, shake for 60 secs and make sure you get the check mark when complete. Easy...worked every time.
While the 750ml can be a bit small when craving mass amounts of H2O at one time, we had to put things in perspective of where we were at and why we were using the All Clear in the first place. In Rwanda, Nicaragua. You are saving a ton of plastic, on top of saving you money buying water in the first place.
Great product, easy to use, will and have already recommended it!

Comments about CamelBak All Clear™ Bottle:

I love the UV part because it screws right into the bottle. It is a very quick sterilizer. Honestly, the only thing i do not like is that it does not work like a LifeStraw because you can't go to any water source and drink from it. I use this for camping and is in my Go Bag.The reason I am giving this 4 out of five is because it does not filter muddy water or dirty water. But functionality wise,I would give it five out of five stars. Honestly i wish it came with the EDDY bottle top. It should be made in USA where all the other CamelBak stuff is made. I would definitely recommend this product.

My girlfriend and I took the All Clear on a recent self-supported bicycle trip around Myanmar (Burma) and fell in love with the bottle. We used it numerous times a day to treat the dodgiest Burmese tap water without any problems. It stayed charged for a number of days and we could just charge it by hooking it up to a computer at an internet cafe. We often lament about the number of plastic water bottles we have to buy and discard when cycle touring in other countries, but with this water filter we had to purchase only a few bottles of water for the entire 5 month trip. One of the most inventive outdoor adventure products to hit the market in years!

I knew I was pushing the life expectancy of my existing filter, I tried the steripen but the tube got damaged tumbling around in my backpack, and I needed something quick for a week-long backpack in the Wind Rivers. I read about this product in Mens Journal, which gave it rave reviews. The reviews were spot on! This thing is so great that after the first day or so, it was just easier for me to do everyone's water. Because I'm most often getting water out of a stream, I did buy the filter just to keep the big stuff out. I also bought a solar charger, but even being out for a week and doing LOTS of water, I didn't need it.
