PACK CLEANING
We recommend wiping your pack with a damp cloth to remove dirt. If the pack is extremely dirty and needs a deeper cleaning, soak it in cool or warm water with a very mild soap. Rinse the pack thoroughly with cool water. If soap residue remains in the fabric, it may create suds if exposed to water or sweat.

DO NOT wash your pack in a washing machine. Machine washing may damage the pack or affect the integrity of the fabric and fasteners, and will void the Got Your Bak™ Guarantee.

RESERVOIR CLEANING
The best way to care for your reservoir is to clean and dry it after every use, especially if you fill the reservoir with anything other than water. However, if a reservoir has not been cleaned after every use, and mold or discoloration develops:

  1. Use hot water and a CamelBak Cleaning Tablet. (Or use 2 tablespoons of baking soda or bleach instead of CamelBak Cleaning Tab.) Mix the solution inside your reservoir and elevate the reservoir above the tube and Big Bite Valve. Pinch the bite valve, allowing the solution to flow into the drink tube and fill the bite valve.
  2. Let the reservoir and cleaning solution sit in the reservoir and drink tube for about 30 minutes.
  3. Wash the reservoir with hot water and mild soap. Be sure to completely rinse away the cleaning solution in the reservoir and drink tube before using again. You can also use CamelBak brushes from our Cleaning Kit to scrub your reservoir and drink tube. Brushes are the best way to ensure you are scrubbing all of the areas of the reservoir clean.
  4. Once the reservoir is clean, be sure to air dry overnight so no moisture is trapped inside, which can cause mold to grow.

These steps will make your reservoir safe for use. If there are still spots left behind, these are permanent mold stains that may not be removable. However, your reservoir is still safe and usable after you’ve cleaned it.

I used this during a week-long trip to Costa Rica when I used it as a carry-on as well as a jungle and civilized day pack every day since we left in the morning and did not return until the evening. I had to keep a full day's supply of water, change of clothes, rain gear and a few other essentials basically at all times.

The pack was pretty loaded up every day and I didn't notice any seams starting to get loose or fraying of fabric. It's durable and feels like it will stand up to some abuse.

My only complaints:
* thin (1") waist belt - I replaced this with a waist belt from another company and it was fine thereafter. It was very easy to remove the existing one and replace it since it uses a velcro attachment. However, at least it has a waist belt as there are other Camelbak packs that do not have waist belts.
* depth of the admin pocket - When you start putting things in the organization area of the admin pocket, it actually blocks the view of the bottom of that same pocket. I suppose it's a trade-off for the extra space they added. I just put infrequently used items in the bottom of that pocket.

A lot of civilian packs have a better ventilated back and other useful organization features like extra pockets or a light frame. This pack is more like a sack with straps. At the same time, this pack will probably outlast several civilian packs as they are typically constructed of lighter materials.

I upgraded the zipper pulls with gutted paracord wrapped in heat shrink, added shock cord to the bottom and included grimloc carabiniers to even further increase the flexibility. It did not let me down.

I originally investing in this product for what I believed was going to be a Mil Spec back but after only two real Rucks it needed repair - both times, at my own expense. And as clever as their 'Got your bak warranty' is named it's useless. It does not cover the fact that the bag is made with weak material and components. It's simply not a well built or tough bag, but it's the cost of one. It's been a huge disappointment. I've since made the investment in a real Mil Spec Ruck and have resorted to using the H.A.W.G. as a very organized EDC for simple carries and commuting around town. This bag was never built to carry real weight or put up with any real abuse. If you don't mind paying for the "look" of a military-style bag but have no intent on putting it through its paces than this could be the bag for you.

Comments about CamelBak Mil Tac H.A.W.G.®-Discontinued:

Great pack overall. I work for the airlines and hike all over the Lower 48, Hawaii and Alaska. I have mostly used my HAWG in S.E. Alaska in the winter which = rain, rain and more rain. Courdura is tough as nails but not very waterproof. I had used a poncho to keep it dry but I just bought a small pack rain cover which works great. This pack is just the right size for a day in the mountains with room to spare. Holds enough water for a serious Palm Springs day hike in +112F weather. Enough room for extra clothing layers on my walks in Fairbanks. Insulation on drinking tube doesn't do much at +10F let alone -25F but wearing it under my coat does the trick. This pack is still comfortable after 13+mile hike. Good all around daypack w/ enough room for all the basics.

I have had this pack for 6 yrs. Very happy with it, it is not a rucksack. So don't try and put 60lbs in it. Great for holding raingear mre socks and water. I have used while in the army for tactical movements, as a backpack for college, as a day bag for hiking and hunting and mountain biking. Replaced the zipper pulls with 550 cord as they have plastic things at the end that click together whenever you move.

AT FIRST GLANCE, THIS PACK LOOKS LIKE IT MAY BE TOO SMALL, BUT ONCE YOU OPEN IT UP AND LOOK INSIDE, YOU SEE PLENTY OF ROOM. LAID OUT VERY WELL. SMART, NOT TOO MUCH SPACE OR TOO MUCH ORGANIZATION OR WASTED SPACE. THE SMALL POCKET ON FRONT IS PERFECT FOR YOUR PHONE WALL/CAR CHARGER, EAR PHONES, ETC. THE ADMIN POUCH IS LAID OUT WELL AND HAS PLENTY OF DEPTH FOR OTHER MISC ITEMS, BUT NOT TOO MUCH TO ENTICE YOU TO CARRY MORE THAN WHAT YOU NEED. THE MAIN POCKET IS CAVERNESS...AND I DO MEAN IT'S LARGER THAN YOU THINK. PERFECT PACK FOR ONE DAY OPERATIONS. I HAVE THIS AND THE BFM. CAN'T GO WRONG!

well thought out and well executed.

however, the color of the pack i ordered in coyote (manufactured 5/13, "assembled in mexico with us and imported components") looks more like olive drab than the light brown / tan color shown on the website.

anyone else notice this on theirs?

my only complaint would be that i think they cheaped out on the zipper pulls.

I have used many types of packs and have spent over a $1000 on various packs to carry my personal items to work. I'm an equipment operator in a coal mine in the Powder River Basin in WY. This bag has been in every piece of equipment in the mining environment. It has been in mud, coal dust, water, rain, snow, etc and by far it is the best pack I've found. I am often asked by co-workers where I found this pack. I point to the label, and I've noticed others carrying identical packs to my pack. So, thanks Camelbak and Keep building them; they will come.

I have the previous version of the HAWG; the one offered prior to the 2013 introduction of their new "Mil Tac" model. Wish they had simply kept the old build style and added Multicam as a color choice. For those of you considering this for an EDC pack, it's a great size. I don't even use the included bladder, and removed it to save a little room. You can fit a 2L Platypus collapsible bottle in the hydration compartment if you want to have the option of carrying H20, but without the bulk. (Wait, is that heresy? Camelbak combined with Platypus? Anyway...) The HAWG is darn-near perfect for carrying what you need on a daily basis.
